  • Requirements:
    1. active participation during tutorials. “Active” means to participate and enrich/contribute to discussions, to fulfill the tasks assigned by lecturer (or by schoolmates according the instructions of lecturer), to work out and present team seminar work;
    2. working out and presentation of seminar work (in a team) – see information below about the organization and registration for presentations;
    3. submitting of questionnaire(s) – see information below. This is “half-optional” requirement. If you are not able to get entry into any company/organization or you have personal ethical constraints to do this task, an alternative supplementary seminar work must be worked out and submitted according the instructions of lecturer.



  • Questionnaire(s) is/are part of survey inquiring various management and managerial issues and is realized under the patronage of the course guarantor and lecturers. Survey results should enrich the knowledge about management environment in the Czech Republic. Educational aim (for students) of the survey is to get a picture of management in concrete firm/organization.

    Questionnaire designated for managers should be answered by manager on the highest level of hierarchy in firm/organization as possible or in the case of micro and/or small firms and organizations also by owners – if he/she participates on managing). Survey is anonymous, nevertheless for the control we appreciate if the name and some contact of respondent is given.

    Questionnaire(s) will be available for students in the middle of October (approx.) in e-learning materials.
  • SEMINAR WORK

    Materials for seminar works are provided by lecturer. Own initiative for supplementary materials is highly appreciated!!!

    Topic of the seminar work: you have to choose from the topic introduced.below.

    You also can work out seminar work focused on analysis of Porter´s five competitive forces. In that case special instructions for work will be given to you. In the email please introduce this topic.

    Seminar works are worked out by individuals or by team (2 persons). They must be prepared both in any presentation format (e.g. PPT) and Word. The length of presentation is app. 20 minutes. The length of Word document is min. 5 pages (except front page and page with references), line spacing max. 1,2, format Times New Roman or Arial and size of letters 11 or 12.

    For references use Harvard style (e.g. http://www.staffs.ac.uk/assets/harvard_quick_guide_tcm44-47797.pdf) – both for the references in the text and in the end of the text as the list.
  • ATTENDANCE AT TUTORIALS

    Only 2 absences without leave are permitted!!!! If this limit will be exceeded and requirements stated in the points 1. – 3. above will not be fulfilled, credits will not be granted and student will not be allowed to proceed to exam.
  • IMPORTANT DEADLINES:

    5th October (midnight) - for the choice of theme and date of presentation –registration for the theme. PLEASE SEND TOPIC AND MEMBERS OF THE TEAM (if you want to work out work in teams) by email to lecturer.

    Presentations (e.g. in PPT) must be uploaded in the e-learnign 24 hours before the date of presentation!

    Text in Word must be uploaded max. 3 weeks after presentation! – final grade is given based also on this text!!!!!

    Submitting questionnaire(s) or supplementary seminar work – date of exam.

    1st term for exam test - beginning of the second week in January 2015

Anotace


Course Description


 


The course explores principles and practices that are fundamental in becoming an effective manager, including basics and fundamentals of management theory, its application in a variety of organizational frameworks, the importance of leadership in both local and global settings. The course will involve an overview approach to covering the various concepts required for an overall understanding of management’s role in the contemporary organization. Course serves as the first introductory course laying foundations for many following courses during the study.


 


The aim of the course:


After taking this course, students are expected:


1. To be able to recognize and use basic terms in management theory;


2. To be able to understand and capture (apply) management concepts;


3. To be able to view business and organizational issues from a management perspective;


4. To improve skills to manage professional and personal lives as well (we all need to manage our lives: better plan and organize our activities, motivate and influence others as well as monitor environments to succeed in both our professional and personal lives).


 


In the end of the course students should be prepared for further study in the area of management, be able to identify and apply appropriate management techniques for managing contemporary organizations, and have an understanding of the skills, abilities, and tools needed to obtain a job on a management track in an organization of their choice. Having followed this course, the students should be better equipped to understand how the firm and/or organization and its managers can utilize knowledge of management theory.
