Sylabus

  • Introduction of cultures as definition and as basis of communication. To build awareness of different cultures and how they affect different ways of doing business in different countries. To explain effects of globalization and americanization of today’s international business world. Definition and interaction of different European cultures as well as American and Asian cultures that student might meet in their tourism career and practice.

    During the semester each student will get a task to make a presentation of a culture of their choice as per inter-cultural study covered in this class.

Anotace

Knowledge: Student is able to define culture, subculture, communication. Student knows what are verbal and non-verbal barriers to communication and can describe differences in cultures based on different non-verbal communication. Student knows lingustic theories on language and culture and Hoefstede’s research on cultures on work place.


Skills: Student is able to analyse particular culture based on set theoretical parametres and understand importance of inter-cultural communication.


General: Student will get general knowledge of at least 5 analysed different cultures.



Course Overview: 


 Introduction of cultures, definitions and different sub-groups within cultures. 


 Definition of race and its determination of cultures. Definition of communication. Differentiation of communication among cultures. Role of language and education in development of way of communication in different cultures. 


 Barriers in inter-cultural communication. Stereotypes. Prejudices. Ethnocentrism, nationalism, racism. 


 Non-verbal barriers to inter-cultural communication. 


 Language barriers in inter-cultural communication. Noam Chomsky’s theory of communication vs. Sapir-Whorfs hypothesis. 


 Business communication and cultures, media, English as International language and its growth through new technologies, media, business and education. 


 Practical seminar on business communication in English, tips on how to write good motivation letter. 


 Dominant culture and how it determines our view of other cultures. 


 Comparative inter-cultural communication. 


 Globalization in inter-cultural communication and business relationship.
